How to Open Dell Precision M20 Battery & Replace the Lithium Ion

Laptop batteries, like all rechargeable battery packs, lose their charging capacity over time. Because new laptop batteries are expensive, replacing the individual cells inside the battery casing can save a lot of money. However, rebuilding a battery sometimes does not work as expected, so it’s important to be willing to purchase a new laptop battery if the procedure fails.

Dell Precision M20 Battery 6 cells 4400MAH [http://www.udtek.com/dell-precision-m20-battery-cells-4400mah-p-24071.html]

Now I will show some steps about How to Open a Laptop Battery & Replace the Lithium Ion

Step 1

Allow the Dell Precision M20 Battery to run down completely. Turn off your laptop, then remove the battery. Write down the model number located on your battery to help identify the type of Li-ion replacement cells you need to purchase.

Step 2

Split open a small section of the battery pack (at the seam) with a screwdriver or craft knife. Continue to pry the plastic case loose moving around the outer edge until the entire top is free. This may take a bit of force.

Step 3

Note the number of cells inside the case (usually four to eight). Write down the part number and voltage information printed on the cell casings. Draw a diagram showing the arrangement of the cells and how they are connected, or take a few photos to help with reassembly.

Step 4

Purchase the correct number and type replacement batteries from a local or online dealer, based on your battery model and cell specifications. Six Li-ion cells typically cost around $30 to $40.

Step 5

Carefully remove each cell using a craft knife and wire cutters as necessary. Each battery pack is different, but the cells are usually wrapped in a plastic casing with metal contacts attached to one end. Lay the metal contacts, wires and casing material aside.

Step 6

Use double-sided tape or a solder gun (only if necessary) to attach the metal contacts to the cells and circuit board. When finished, the old cells should be completely stripped (naked) and the new cells should look like the old ones as much as possible.

Step 7

Place the new cells inside the case, referring to your diagram or photos if necessary. Glue the battery pack top back on. Charge the new notebook battery for at least 24 hours before using it.

My HP 239427-001 Adapter is not Working for me

A non-functional hp 239427-001 adapter can cause big problems; especially if the computer’s battery is low or drained. In addition to preventing you from getting your work done, it can also be an electrical shock or fire hazard.

Troubleshooting a non-working adapter 239427 001 can be difficult because there are several factors that could be at fault if the computer is not getting power. If you are at the end of your rope, there are a few hints to help get your computer up and running.

Laptop computers run off battery, or DC power. DC means “Direct Current,” and refers to the way current flows from the source. Direct current is basically a continuous and steady stream of energy. The adapter that came with your laptop computer is known as an AC adapter, which converts the Alternating Current supplied by your wall outlet into the Direct Current that is required to run your laptop. Alternating current does not flow as a steady stream.

A big cause of laptop adapter failures is cord crimps. These can occur when an office chair with casters rolls over the cord on a hard surface. The conductor of the cord can eventually break under the stress of being rolled over. If the cord or insulation is not completely severed, it may not show where the short has occurred. Since most adapters include an LED that will light up when the device is plugged in, a good indicator that there is a short would be an unlit LED.Any time the adapter has cuts in the insulation of its cord, or is otherwise missing pieces of its insulation, it should be replaced immediately. Bare wires carry a risk of serious or fatal shocks, as well as possible fire hazard. Do not attempt to repair your AC adapter. Contact the laptop’s manufacturer or seller to find information about a replacement adapter.

The portion of your adapter that does all the work is colloquially referred to as the “brick.” The brick is the heavy box that sits between the wall and your computer and is connected by a permanent cord and one that may be removable. The brick, for all its heft, contains some delicate components, and can be damaged fairly easily if it is dropped from a considerable height. Generally speaking, if the brick stops working, the LED that indicates power will not light. If the brick portion of your adapter is not working, you will have to replace the adapter. Contact your computer’s manufacturer or the seller for information about a replacement adapter.

The point on your computer to which your adapter connects is not prone to failure, but, being soldered to the motherboard with little other support, can break. If your computer only powers intermittently, or you have to “wiggle” the adapter to get power, there’s a good possibility that the power input on your computer has broken. This is not an easy or quick fix; you may need to replace the entire motherboard, depending on your computer model. A technician should be able to diagnose the problem and give you a price quote on the repair. In some cases, the computer may not be worth the price of the repair.

The easiest way to test your laptop ac adapter is to plug it in. In addition to the adapter’s LED, there should be an additional LED on your computer to indicate that the computer is getting power from the outlet. If neither of these LEDs lights, then there is definitely a power problem. If an identical, “known good” adapter can be obtained, connect it to your computer. If the computer gets power from the new adapter, then a replacement adapter will fix the problem. If the computer does not get power from either adapter, there is probably an issue with the computer. At this point, it is recommended that the computer be brought to a PC repair technician for diagnosis.

Jury-rigging should never be attempted, due to the risk of shocks, fire and damage to the computer. Do not use another computer’s adapter if it is not the same model or brand, even if it fits. Failure to match input and output voltages on laptop adapters could damage the computer, the adapter or both. Contact the manufacturer or the seller of your computer for information about replacement adapters.

If you cannot find a brand and model-specific replacement adapter for your computer, it may be possible to purchase a laptop universal power, which includes multiple, interchangeable tips. You will need to find one that matches your original adapter’s wattage, and it should also include a matching or switchable voltage output.

Toshiba x305 adapter can not fully charge the laptop battery

Does your Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q701, or some other Toshiba POS randomly shut off and not fully charge the laptop battery? This is apparently a very common problem with these notebooks. When I had to fix my friend’s laptop I searched all over the internet for a solution. I found quite a few forum threads and laptop reviews discussing the issue but no one actually fixed it themselves. Lazy bastards. Most of these folks were having them sent in for warranty work and having the entire main boards replaced. This is a ridiculous waste of money for someone. I did see an ad for some computer repair place who was charging $200 to fix these, which is a total rip off. They were replacing the jack (claiming $20 just for the part!!) which is not necessary (at least not with this one). Well, I am really cheap and I didn’t want to deal with the time or BS of having it shipped (the warranty is expired anyway), so I fixed it. Cliff’s notes at bottom.

The power led on the front would flicker when the Toshiba x305 adapter was plugged in. I could wiggle the power cord and it would change the nature of the flickering. Sometimes it would stay on continuously and sometimes it would shut off depending on the wiggling. This behavior had the obvious side effects of shutting the computer off and never really charging the battery. Oh how irritating.

At first I thought it was the power cord. I mean I could wiggle the cord and it made changes to the flickering, so why not? After testing it with the volt meter it seemed to be good, good enough to not spend ~$85 on a new power cord. What else could it be?

The x305 adapter jack in the machine turned out to be the culprit. Well, sort of. Technically it was the connection between the jack and the main board. Yeah, just a stupid connection. Not the whole motherboard like the corporate “customer service” reps want you to think. See, the jack has the positive connection coming out of the back and directly into the board with a little weak solder joint keeping the jack from rocking back and forth. When the laptop is subjected to normal amounts of power cord wiggling it breaks the weak joint and screws up power delivery. You can test this by plugging in the laptop and pushing the end of the cord (where it goes into the computer) in different directions while watching the green power light. Mine broke mostly on the top joint and so the light would be a solid green if I pushed the cord end UP (thereby pushing the connection back together), and would totally turn off when I pushed the cord end down.

You can view the backside of the jack by popping the little panel thats above the laptop keyboard (it also goes over the screen hinges):

You can plug the computer in and wiggle the cord end to see if there is a visible crack. Mine had a visible crack when i pushed the cord end down. The picture above, however, was taken after I fixed it, so I have no pics of the crack.

Ok, so now you have to fix it. This is extremely easy. If you have ever soldered, you can do it. Take the laptop apart. I used this guide here which is really good. Just get the main board out so you can solder on the bottom of the jack. Once the board is out you just solder the bottom of the + terminal of the jack (the part of the jack that goes into the middle of the cord). Then solder the top. I tried to make the top solder joint as beefy as possible so it takes a while before the problem happens again. i.e. solder the circled terminal on top and the corresponding bottom terminal:

Power stuff on X305-Q701 went to shit. Wasn’t the power cord. Was the + side jack connection to the main board. Take apart laptop, take out main board, re-solder on the bottom AND on the top of + connection. Put it back together. Enjoy the not-sucking laptop.

My Dell laptop has a power problem

My Dell laptop has a power problem.

The Dell Precision M20 Battery stops charging when I move the power cord on the DC adapter. When I start moving the cord left to right, the power LED light on the front goes on and off and the battery charge LED goes on and off too.

I removed the precision m20 battery and tested the laptop again. The laptop starts fine from the DC adapter when the battery is removed, but as soon as I start moving the power cord the laptop shuts off. It looks like the laptop looses power immediately.

If you have a problem like that, most likely it’s related either to the power adapter or the DC-IN power jack.

First of all, I tested the laptop power ac adapter with a multimeter. The power didn’t cut off no matter how badly I moved the cord. The power adapter output voltage was 15.45VDC all the time. That means there is nothing wrong with the power adapter and most likely there is a problem with with the power socket inside the laptop.

Now I’m going to test the power socket inside the laptop.

In order to access the power socket I had to disassemble the laptop and remove the top cover assembly with the display.

You can find disassembly instructions for many HP, Dell, IBM, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba laptops in these service manuals and guides.

In the laptop I was fixing (Tecra M2) the power jack is attached to a DC-IN harness and this harness can be unplugged from the motherboard.

As you see, I removed the DC-IN harness from the motherboard, plugged in the power adapter and tested continuity with my multimeter as it shown on the picture.

When the power cord is still, the voltage output is 15.45VDC, the same as on the plug.

But as soon as I start wiggling the plug inside the jack, the power cuts off and voltage goes to 0. It means, the power harness is bad.

The problem was fixed after I replaced the defective DC-IN harness with a new one.

In some laptops the power socket (DC jack) is soldered to the motherboard.
If the battery stops charging when you wiggle the power plug inside the jack, either you have a bad power adapter (test it with a voltmeter) or the power jack is broken or loose.

You cannot simply unplug the jack and replace it with another one. You’ll have to unsolder the old jack and solder a new one back on the motherboard as I described in this post.

If the power jack is not broken but loose (not making good contact with the motherboard) you can resolder the old jack without replacing it with a new one.

If you want to buy a new one,you can see more information from http://www.udtek.com

Some tips to repair toshiba tecra 9100 adapter

The Toshiba tecra 9100 adapter gets pushed into the laptop base so it feels loose.I don’t know if it’s a poor design or people just not careful enough with their laptops, but the Toshiba ac adapter in these models breaks very often. The power jack and mounting brackets on the base assembly got broken.

Toshiba Tecra 9100 AC Adapter 75W 15V 5A

Even if you replace the broken tecra 9100 adapter jack with a new one, it will not stay attached to the base. If you send a laptop with a damage like that to a repair shop, they will recommend replacing the power jack harness and laptop base. This repair will easily cost over $200 but I have a better idea how to fix it for $3 without replacing the base assembly.

What can you do to fix the power socket?

1. If the base assembly is OK, but the DC-IN jack is broken, you’ll have to replace the DC-IN power harness.

2. In the worst case scenario you’ll have to replace both parts, the base assembly AND power jack harness.

3. If the power jack is OK but the base is broken, you’ll have to replace the base assembly, which means you’ll have to disassemble the whole laptop.

I will replace the original plastic jack with a generic metal jack purchased at RadioShack for about $3. The RadioShack part number is 274-1576. You can order this jack online or pick it up in a local store.

Laptop power socket

There is a gap between the power jack and laptop base and when you plug the laptop ac adapter inside the jack it feels very loose. In some cases, the power jack disconnects from the laptop base and you cannot plug in the power adapter at all.

In order to understand what’s going on it’s necessary to remove the top cover and take a closer look at the power jack.
As you see on the picture below, the power jack is not seated correctly and separated from the laptop base.

Mounting bracket broken:
But in many cases you have both parts broken, the power jack and base assembly.

Power connector broken:
In other cases, the DC-IN power jack is OK but the laptop base is broken. The power jack mounts between two plastic brackets inside the case. If one of the brackets is broken (the left one in my case), the DC-IN power jack will not seat correctly.

Power socket not seated properly:
In some cases it happens because the DC-IN power jack gets broken.By the way, if your laptop is still under warranty, dell might fix this problem at no charge. Call them first or take the laptop to the authorized repair center.
If this modification works for you, please mention the laptop model in the comments. or you can buy a new one from this website: http://www.udtek.com .

Dell U4873 Battery Guide

Notebook batteries are common topic of discussion, and the vast majority of questions about them deal with prolonging their lives. There is a lot of information about Lithium Ion (hereafter Li-Ion) batteries to wade through. There are a lot of misconceptions floating around as well. This simple guide addresses the most common notebook battery questions and concerns.

Your notebook battery such as Dell U4873 Battery will deteriorate over time whether you use it or not. Although the Li-Ion industry does not publicize this fact, your battery’s clock began ticking the moment it was assembled. The elements inside your battery slowly react with each other, eventually rendering the battery unable to supply the required power to your notebook. In addition, your battery is rated to last between 300 and 800 charge/recharge cycles. It will gradually lose charge capacity rather than abruptly fail to power your notebook.
How long will the battery last?
The general consensus is that notebook batteries(u4873 battery) last one to three years. While you can slow the battery’s aging and loss of capacity, you cannot stop either decline. The temperature of the battery, combined with the amount and nature of its usage contribute significantly to your battery’s lifespan. You can ease the aging process with some care and maintenance.

Nature of Usage

Li-Ion batteries do not suffer from the memory-effect (requiring complete discharge before recharging to avoid loss of capacity) like older rechargeable batteries. Regular full discharge/recharge cycles result in an increased loss of capacity per cycle. A series of partial discharge cycles are better for Li-Ion batteries than a single full discharge. You should, however, calibrate your battery routinely.

Temperature

Lower temperatures slow down the self-discharge (loss of charge while disconnected) and aging process of the elements within your battery. Therefore it follows that higher temperatures shorten the life of your battery. Leaving your battery connected while on laptop ac power adapter causes the internal temperature of the battery to rise. Removing your battery and storing it in a cool, dry place will help to slow the aging process. Keeping your notebook in a hot environment is also detrimental to your battery.

Amount of Usage

The Lithium-Ion batteries used in notebooks are rated to handle between 300 and 800 charge/discharge cycles. Some of these cycles are used when you leave your battery connected to your notebook while on AC power. On AC power, the notebook will routinely “top-off” the battery when its charge reaches predetermined levels (i.e. 95%). Removing your laptop battery and storing it in a cool, dry place will help to preserve some of these cycles.

Tips to Maximise Dell Inspiron B130 Battery Life

Laptop batteries are designed specifically for different laptops brand as well as models. Today laptops are powered by lithium ion batteries. Lithium ion batteries are lighter, have a better power-to-weight ratio, have a longer usable life, can hold a charge longer, and do not have the memory effect to fail prematurely.

Lithium ion batteries(such as Dell Inspiron B130 Battery and dell precision m60 battery ) are also inexpensive to manufacture as compared to the earlier generation of nickel metal hydride batteries. The only shortcoming about lithium ion batteries is as they contain lithium salt dissolved in a highly flammable solvent, there are chances of overhead which can result in short-circuits or even blow up in flames.

It is a common fact that all laptop batteries have provision for limited time of power supply. A good bargain is to check the battery power while buying a notebook. Here is one instant tip to optimize the battery settings in accordance with the energy saving mode of your notebook. These settings will put the hard disk into sleep mode whenever the workload is less and it will reduce the notebook microprocessor performance in order to maximize its battery life.

From the system preferences mode of your laptop, select view menu, then choose energy saver option from view menu. Right click on show details option and choose battery power from the pop-up menu. Finally choose longest battery life from the energy settings pop-up menu.
Tips to optimise your notebook batteries are described in the following:
It is a good investment to add more memory to your laptop as it saves battery power by reducing Windows’ dependence on the virtual memory swap file on your hard disk.

It is better to keep your laptop on standby mode when not in use for certain amount of time. Standby mode ensures all current info is saved in RAM with minimum consumption of battery power.
Charge your laptop battery frequently with a battery charger or AC adapter. It is very important to clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months to make it dust free. You can use a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol to clean your laptop battery.
Try to set the screen brightness of the LCD panel of your laptop to the lowest comfortable level as very bright screen tends to consume more power from your battery.

Similarly it is better to get rid of the outer peripherals such as printers or digital cameras as they can still draw power from your laptop battery even when they are not used.

Turn of the unused features and technologies of your laptopo which are not frequently usable. For example, it is better to eject the CD or DVD when you are not using them as the optical drive has the tendency of reading CD or DVD it finds very often and this process consume extra battery power.

To save power, it is good idea to turn off the AirPort, Wi-Fi, IR radios and Bluetooth option when it is not required to use. Virus scan should be set only during the time you are usually plugged in as full-disk virus check by the hard drive and CPU consumes additional power from battery.

Opt for the power console applet to customize the power profiles on your laptop. Do not worry in case your notebook does not have power console applet option for most of the operating systems (starting from windows 98) have Power Options utility in Control Panel.

Turning off or at least disabling the PC Cards, FireWire devices and USB when not in use also saves battery power. In fact, disabling modem, network cards and USB ports consumes less battery power even when they are on. These devices are easily disabled in device manager.
You can use power saver option of your operating system to adjust the CPU processing power. Optimum CPU processes consume additional battery power and hence should be avoided if not required. Stop the auto start applications on your laptop, so that your laptop`s CPU can be stopped from doing unnecessary work.

With the above mentioned handy tips, you can truly increase the battery performance of your laptop.
